Red Car Property: 1955, India Stop, Last Day Of Red Car Service

Photo: Loren Ayers, June 19, 1955, the last day of service on the Glendale Line. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

This is one of those iconic photos I always thought was shot at the Fletcher Viaduct.  The grade of the Red Car Property is significantly higher in this photo, than it is today at India Street (see photo below.)  The Atlantic Richfield Station in the background always threw me.  (But then, there seemed to be an Atlantic Richfield Station on every corner in our part of town.)  The wooden hand rails on the opposite side of the track were at India, not Fletcher.

Photo: Diane Edwardson, May 8, 2011.  Sadly, this was the best I could do to match the 1955 photo.  (Click on photo to enlarge.)

The vegetation is too thick to get a good shot with the same telephone poles.  It is more likely the 1955 photo was shot from either the Roselin Public Staircase or the private staircase directly opposite India, where there is dense vegetation blocking the view too.

Once again, we'd like to thank Red Car historian Paul Ayers, who shared some of his family archives with us. Ayers will give a free presentation featuring hundreds of historic photos combined with current views of the Pacific Electric Red Car Trolley's Glendale Line, Thursday, May 12. Red Car Property: Below Lake View Ave

Photo: Ayers Family Archive, undated.  Most people have no idea the Red Car Trolley tracks used to run at the base of the telephone poles that are midway up the slope between the Corralitas end of the Red Car Property and Lake View.
Photo: Diane Edwardson, March 21, 2011.  (Click on photo to enlarge.)  The red line indicates the approximate location of the tracks before they were removed.  The telephone poles were not relocated.  Countless tons of earth were removed from the Red Car Property to build the adjacent 2 & 5 Freeways, starting in 1960.

Red Car historian Paul Ayers shared some of his family archives with us.  Ayers will give a free presentation featuring hundreds of historic photos combined with current views of the Pacific Electric Red Car Trolley's Glendale Line Thursday May 12.  Click here for more information.

Allesandro Cut, Circa 1940s: 2 Freeway, 2010

Photo: Ayers Family Archive, circa 1940s. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

It's hard to believe the Allesandro Cut was such a narrow passage for the Pacific Electric Red Car Trolleys when compared to the 2 Freeway today.  It looks like this is shot where the Oak Glen overpass is today, facing north.  The Semi Tropic Spiritualists' Tract is the unbuilt hillside in the background on the right.

Glendale Historical Society: Free Slide Show May 12, 2011

Next Thursday, May 12, 2011, the Glendale Historical Society presents a free slide show by Red Car Historian Paul Ayers, with historic and current photos of the Glendale Line from Downtown Los Angeles to Glendale.

Seating is limited.  We've been advised to get there early because these Red Car Trolley programs are quite popular.  They often have to turn people away.  Library visitors receive 3 hours free parking at The Market Place parking structure (across the street) with validation from the library loan desk.

More info : www.glendalehistorical.org or (818) 242-7447

Red Car Historian Paul Ayers grew up in the area and shared some of his family archive with the Corralitas Red Car Property Blog. We'll be running some of his photos daily for the next week.
Photo: Loren Ayers (Paul's uncle), June 19, 1955 (enlarged from the previous photo).  That's 3-year-old Paul Ayers hanging out the window of a Red Car Trolley (PE #5010) on the last day of service on the Glendale Line.  Paul's cousin Allen, as well as Paul's father and sister are also in the windows.

For the local historians... (as seen in the original photo at top of this post), the row of palm trees in the background (off Fellowship Parkway) indicates the trolley is at the Whitmore Stop.
