Photo: Diane Edwardson, February 19, 2015. It seems the only time I see woodpeckers in the neighborhood, they are looking for grubs in a dead or dying tree or in a rotten wood telephone pole. (Click on photo to enlarge.)
Dead Eucalyptus Week reminded me of one of the harbingers of doom for trees in the neighborhood: woodpeckers. You'll hear the tap-tap-tapping in the dead and dying trees. There were small flocks of them in the dead Eucalyptus on the north end of the Red Car Property last year. I had never seen so many woodpeckers in one place, but I'd also never seen so many big dead Eucalyptus in one location.
This is just an observation gleaned from 25 years of walking the Red Car Property neighborhood.
