I'd been hearing them for about a year, as the trees have been in a death spiral, but couldn't see them through all the dead foliage. (They're such small birds, this was the best shot I could get in the harsh light.) From what avid birders tell me, it is most likely a Nuttall's Woodpecker.

A few days after after we posted photos on this blog, in addition to talking to Trust for Public Land & City Councilmember O'Farrell's staff about the trees, 2 of the 9 dead trees on the north end of the property were trimmed back considerably. Not only are the dead & dying trees a fire danger in the Hillside area, they are at risk of falling in a Santa Ana Wind event or in a rainstorm.
