The City Department of Lot Cleaning doesn't exactly live up to their name. The department is tasked with cleaning up vacant lots of dumped trash and doing the brush clearance on certain large lots, like the Red Car Property and the Semi-Tropic Spiritualists' Tract Garden Lots. Both lots appear on an annual brush clearance list for Lot Cleaning, because of the persistent neglect by a series of owners.
Last year, they just tilled the earth around the mattress. This year, perhaps they thought the mattress could be turned into mulch by running it over with the bulldozer and giant roto-tiller they use to do brush clearance. A homeless man abandoned the mattress last October.
Requests for removal, with photos, have been repeatedly provided to CD13 on a regular basis for over a year. Not only did Lot Cleaning fail to pick up the abandoned mattress two years in a row, the independent contractors who did the brush clearance two weeks ago, failed to remove it. Maybe it will turn to mulch in another 50 years.
