Photo: Corralitas Neighbor: September 21, 2017. On the last full day of summer rain fell! At least the street sweeper blew less dust in the air.
We track rainfall totals in the Corralitas Drive rain gauge. For the past couple of years, we followed the water year as the rain year since the State changed the way it measured rain or water year from October 1 to September 30.
Previously the season to date was from July 1 to June 30. Apparently everyone is confused by the fluidity of the definitions (pun intended). I'm now finding July 1 to June 30 the primary rainfall season once again.
So this is either the first rain of the year 2017 - 2018 (since our last measurable rainfall on Corralitas Drive was May 7, 2017) or it could be the last rain of 2016-2017. For now, less than a tenth of one inch isn't going to change our Corralitas totals enough to worry about to which year we're attributing it. The LA Almanac and other sources count the season as July 1 to June 30. So we're returning to that schedule this rainy season and will, once again, identify July 1 to June 30, "season to date."

Photo: Corralitas Neighbor, May 7, 2017. A wild cut-off low zoomed back for a second round with a huge thunderstorm Sunday around 4:45 PM. The thunder was so loud the Corralitas Rain Gauge Monitor said, "I think there's a bowling alley in the attic!"

Most responsible hillside homeowners got their brush clearance done by May 1, prompting the Corralitas Rain Gauge Monitor to complain, "I can hear the f'n weeds slurping up the water and all the seeds about to pop!"

With a recent uptick in Silver Lake vehicle related crime, neighbors were suspicious of this black Honda, as its rear windows were blocked by black towels. It took off when a neighbor pulled in behind it. It pays to befriend your neighbors. Neighbors look out for one another on Corralitas.

Photo: Corralitas Neighbor, February 3, 2017. Non-native but naturalized Peruvian Pepper Trees (behind and to the left of the gargoyle) are a common hillside tree in our area, that managed to thrive during the drought even in areas where the native Black Walnuts were not doing well.

Photo: Red Car Property Neighbor, January 12, 2017, around 5 PM. After a day of nearly 3" of rain, a white Ford 4x4 crew cab pick-up truck with what appears to be a large chair in the truck bed, got stuck in the mud. Another neighbor reports the California license plate as: 2901901. We don't know if they were joyriding, planning of dumping the chair or actually had legitimate business on the Corralitas end of the Red Car Property. The white stuff on the ground is water (Lake Corralitas) reflecting the sky. (Click on photo to enlarge.)
On a separate note, check out all the rows of new plantings on the southbound lanes of the 2 Freeway. Sadly they are just shrubs, not trees.

We'd only had a half inch of rain before these photos were shot today.

Not only is the swap/vernal pool fed by the run-off from the Lake View Ave slope side of the Red Car Property, it's also fed by a portion of Red Car Canyon Creek. While it's hard to see in this photo, if you've ever actually walked the property in the rain, you'll see the water flowing out of Red Car Canyon in both directions: north toward India Street and south toward the 2 Freeway.
