Red Car Property Neighborhood: Swallowtail Butterflies

Photo: Diane Edwardson, February 27, 2013.  I haven't been able to get a shot of any of the dozens of Swallowtail Butterflies I saw for the past few weeks, so this is a stock photo from last winter.  (Click on photo to enlarge.)

A batch of Swallowtail Butterflies must have emerged from their cocoons this over the past few weeks as these large dramatically striped butterflies seemed to be all over the Red Car Property neighborhood.  They also seem to fly more erratically and faster in the summer than in the winter, so I was unable to get a clear shot of one.

The easiest to use guide to butterflies I've found is: UC Irvine's Butterflies of Orange County

A less user friendly guide: Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA)
