Photo: Diane Edwardson, July 22, 2013. After daily sightings and constant calling to be fed, neighbors grew tired of the 2 Red Tailed Hawk babies. This was the last time I saw any of the Red Tails, adult or juvenile, for more than a week. (Click on photo to enlarge.)
How do I know these are our young hawks? They are trailing their legs awkwardly below them as they soar unsteadily above the 2 Freeway adjacent to my home (and near their nest at Allesandro & Rosebud). Adults pull their feet in for better aerodynamics.
One was the skinny, scrawny hawk, the other was considerably larger but still awkward. One of the adults joined the circle as they gained so much height you could see the youngsters struggling with what to do next. They were calling, and generally seemed to be enjoying their ungainly riding of the updrafts from the 2 & 5 Freeways.
