Red Car Property: THEM!

Photo: Diane Edwardson, April 13, 2013.  California Harvester Ants are NOT Red Imported Fire Ants.  (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Harvester Ants are a sign the ecosystem of the northern end of the Red Car Property is healthy and diverse.  It means there is an abundant supply of a variety of food sources to maintain a healthy population over a large swath of the property between
the Coast Live Oak Tree on Lot C and the Historic Viaduct Footings.  Their continued presence is a sign of good biodiversity on the land.

Photo: Diane Edwardson, April 13, 2013.  Harvester Ants are not aggressive like invasive Red Imported Fire Ants, but they will defend their nest if provoked, and can bite quite hard with sharp pinchers.  You'll often see a debris pile of several types of weeds, seed pods or clippings in a circle, 6-12' from the nest opening.

Earlier close-up photos show why I refer to Harvester Ants as THEM!
