Unfortunately, this Gopher Snake probably didn't make it for long, once the neighbor released it into a nearby vacant lot. It had some small, cat-sized puncture wounds near its head.
Judging by the plethora of gopher holes in the hillsides this year, the Gopher Snakes must have had a breeding frenzy. We had way more sightings than usual this year.
