Red Car Canyon: Mystery Walnut?

Photo: Diane Edwardson, June 23, 2010. There's a mystery nut growing in Red Car Canyon. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

No wonder I always see squirrels fighting in this tree in Red Car Canyon. The fruit is 3 times the size of native California Black Walnuts. The skin of the fruit is slightly fuzzy, unlike the smooth skin of Black Walnuts. The leaves are much larger too.

One neighbor suggested it may be Butternut or another species of walnut. If you can identify this nut, send us a link to a source: redcarproperty@gmail.com.
