Corralitas Public Staircase: Non-Native, Invasive Spanish Broom

Photo: Diane Edwardson, June 14, 2010. Spanish Broom (Spartium junceum) is blooming throughout the neighborhood. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

Unfortunately, the non-native, yet scenic Spanish Broom is classified as highly invasive by the California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC). Non-native invasive plants push out native plants and fail to provide habitat for native wildlife.

Cal-IPC also has a "Don't Plant A Pest" section on their website including links to resources and nurseries where you can learn more about more appropriate choices for landscaping your yard.
